"Salsa" is a "big band" form of Latin music that came out of New York City in the 1970's. The music explores a fusion of rhythms founded originally in Cuban and African cultures. Classic Salsa movements come from the cultures original folkloric dances and are fused with Latin Hustle, Disco, and other popular dance genres of the time period.

The salsa “basic step” comes from Mambo, and much of the Salsa body movement is derived from Cuban Son.
